CANOPY WALK IN RWANDA

Canopy walk in Rwanda

Canopy Walk in Rwanda.

The canopy walk is normally done in Nyungwe national park where you can also trek our close relatives - chimpanzees. Nyungwe national park is situated in south western part of Rwanda and according to history, it is one of the oldest rain forested national park in the whole of Africa.

Nyungwe national park covers an area of 970 square kilometres and well famous for harbouring the 13 primates including chimpanzees. Other primates include red tailed monkeys, colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and bush babies among others, sheltered within Nyungwe’s most comfortable habitats – bamboo plantations, rainforest, bog and swamps.

There is a lot to do in Nyungwe national park such as chimpanzee trekking, bird watching, nature walks and an amazing canopy walk adventure. This is the only East African canopy walk way where a long bridge has been suspended 70 metres high and 160 metres long.

A guided walk through this canopy using Igishigishigi or Imbaranga or Umuyove trails rewards you with the best view of spotting nature and wildlife and within 2 hours, you will be rewarded with the best experience you’ve never had.

This activity was introduced in this park way back in 2010 and until now it’s the second most famous after chimpanzee trekking in this ancient forest. There are three section walks and these are 25 metres, 40 metres and 90 metres trail. But for a full exploration of wildlife, the longest trail is emphasised.

There is a lot to spot while on a canopy walk, ranging from a wide variety of birds like the Rwenzori batis, red throated Alethe, blue turacos, Ruwenzori nightjar, white tailed crested flycatcher and resident primates include olive baboons, silver monkeys, owl-faced monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, bush babies and much more. Other mammals like golden cats, bush pig and elusive leopards roam the park and can be spotted with an eagle eye or during a night walk through the forest.

What to pack for a canopy walk in Rwanda?

Some travellers wonder about what to bring for a canopy walk adventure; but some or all of these equipment are ideal for this memorable tour; a camera for memorable photos while on canopy walk, Hiking shoes since before you start the walk on this bridge you pass through muddy trails and bog.

Also, a pair of binoculars is required and this will help you to view distant animals and birds and insect repellent to protect you from the biting forest insects, Rain coat since in rain forests weather cannot be predicted and a bottle of enough drinking water to keep you hydrated.

Best time for canopy walk in Rwanda.

Rwanda canopy walk can be done all year round depending on the time you want but the activity is more enjoyable during the dry seasons which normally starts in December to early March and June to September. This is when the skies are blue, good for photography, easy penetration into the forest since the trails are a bit dry and easily navigable.

Therefore, visiting Rwanda without canopy walk in Nyungwe national park is like eating a half cooked cake. Therefore, as you make your travel arrangements, we are here to help you plan the best safari in Rwanda with a Canopy walk in Nyungwe forest national park.
