Chimpanzee trekking is one of the activities that make any Uganda safari unique. Not only is it incredibly special to be able to combine both gorilla and chimp trek in one country but Kibale Forest is one of the best places not only in Uganda but in the world, to see chimpanzees.
Kibale forest forms a bigger part of Kibale forest national park cover an area of 795sq.km and this forest is composed of tropical trees, patches of grassland and wide swamps. These habitats harbour both land and water dwellers including 70 mammal species, 375 bird species, 351 tree species and this makes it a perfect destination for botany research and education.
Most importantly, Kibale forest is home of 13 primates including our beautiful cousins, the chimpanzees with which we share 98% of our DNA. Other primates include vervet monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, olive baboons, red-tailed monkeys, grey checked mangabey and L’Hoest’s monkeys.
Chimpanzee trekking / tracking begins from Kanyanchu tourist centre, starting from 08:00hours to 12:00hours and each group of chimps can be visited by six individuals only on a given trek. The activity starts with a short briefing to get a picture of what you are about to trek. Trekking time ranges between 2-4 hours and a certificate is awarded to you after the trek.
Interesting moments start after meeting the chimps; you will find them calling each other and swinging from one tree to another. A whole family of chimps could be watching you but you would never know until they decide to reveal themselves! The rangers are incredibly knowledgeable, answering all your questions and letting you know which chimps you could get closer to or to stay further away from others.
While in the forest, have a chance to watch them build nests for their afternoon naps, feed and groom their young ones before heading back. While in the forest, you will meet a variety of attractions like butterflies, tree species, birds like the great blue turacos among others.

Trekking can be done by all visitors between the age of 15 years and above and to be able to trek you need a valid chimpanzee permit and good health condition.
There are set rules and regulations to make the activity run smoothly and among others include not mimicking chimps, not feeding chimpanzees, not littering in the park and not using flashlight cameras.
When to go for chimpanzee trekking in Kibale forest?
Most travellers get confused about the best time of the year to go for chimp trekking in this rain forested area of Kibale. All you need to know is that the activity can be done throughout the year though the most preferable time is between December-march and June to August. These are dry seasons and the weather is favourable, the trails seem to be passable than during the rainy season.
