Hiking the “Mountains of the Moon”

Rwenzori Mountains National Park is located in southwestern Uganda, on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, it is famously known as the “Mountains of the Moon” and is home to Africa’s third-highest peak, Mount Stanley. The park’s unique landscape features a mix of glaciers, snowfields, fast-flowing rivers, and pristine alpine flora, making it one of the continent’s most beautiful mountain ranges.

Reaching the peaks is a test of endurance, navigating steep and boggy terrain that can take a week or more. But every step reveals a new breathtaking vista, dramatic waterfalls, serene glacial lakes, and a silent, humbling wilderness. With the help of experienced local guides and porters, this journey becomes a story of triumph and unparalleled natural beauty.

The Rwenzori Mountains offer several distinct hiking trails:
  • Central Circuit Trail: The most popular route, offering a challenging circular seven-day trek with stunning views of the high Rwenzori.

  • Kilembe Trail: Ascending the southern slopes, this route passes by glacial lakes and through the Nyamwamba valley before joining the Central Circuit.

  • Bukurungu Trail: A less-used route that offers a more remote experience.

Whichever trail you choose, the journey is an immersion into a unique ecological system, with expert guides ensuring a safe and respectful experience for both you and the mountain.
