Semuliki National Park, located in the remote western region of Uganda, is a hidden gem that offers a unique experience unlike any other in East Africa. As the only tract of true lowland tropical rainforest on the continent, it is an eastern extension of the vast Ituri Forest of the Congo Basin. This unique location gives the park a rich biodiversity, making it a “true birders’ paradise” and a haven for Central African wildlife.
Exploring this ancient forest isn’t a typical safari. You’ll trek through dense jungle and across winding trails, leading you to bubbling hot springs and breathtaking views. Every step is an adventure, a chance to spot rare birds and primates, and an immersion into an ecosystem that has remained unchanged for millennia.
The Sempaya Hot Springs: The park’s most famous attraction, a pair of male and female hot springs so hot they can cook eggs.
Lowland Tropical Forest: The park is East Africa’s only true lowland tropical rainforest, home to Central African species.
Birding Trails: Over 441 bird species make it an essential destination for serious birdwatchers.
Expert rangers and guides lead all walks and treks, ensuring a safe and respectful experience while sharing their vast knowledge of the park’s ecology.
There’s more to Semuliki than just hot springs:
Sempaya Hot Springs Visit: Witness the geothermal wonders and the cultural significance of the boiling hot springs.
Birdwatching: A headline adventure for bird enthusiasts, with over 441 species to discover.
Guided Nature Walks: Trek along trails like the Kirumia Trail to spot primates, butterflies, and unique flora.
Cultural Visits: Meet and interact with the Batwa pygmy community and learn about their traditional hunter-gatherer lifestyle.
Nocturnal Game Drives: The nearby Semuliki Wildlife Reserve offers a chance to spot rare nocturnal animals.
Dry Seasons: December–February and June–September are the most popular months, as trails are less muddy and views are clearer.
Rainy Seasons: March–May and October–November bring lush greenery and fewer tourists, but the trails can be slippery and some roads may be challenging.
By Air: Scheduled and charter flights operate from Entebbe International Airport to Kasese Airstrip. From Kasese, it’s a scenic 2–3-hour drive to the park.
By Road: From Kampala, the journey to the park via Fort Portal takes approximately 7-8 hours. The drive is scenic, passing through tea plantations and the Rwenzori Mountains foothills. The park is located about 52km from Fort Portal.
