Rwenzori Mountains National Park is located in southwestern Uganda, on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, it is famously known as the “Mountains of the Moon” and is home to Africa’s third-highest peak, Mount Stanley. The park’s unique landscape features a mix of glaciers, snowfields, fast-flowing rivers, and pristine alpine flora, making it one of the continent’s most beautiful mountain ranges.
Reaching the peaks is a test of endurance, navigating steep and boggy terrain that can take a week or more. But every step reveals a new breathtaking vista, dramatic waterfalls, serene glacial lakes, and a silent, humbling wilderness. With the help of experienced local guides and porters, this journey becomes a story of triumph and unparalleled natural beauty.
Central Circuit Trail: The most popular route, offering a challenging circular seven-day trek with stunning views of the high Rwenzori.
Kilembe Trail: Ascending the southern slopes, this route passes by glacial lakes and through the Nyamwamba valley before joining the Central Circuit.
Bukurungu Trail: A less-used route that offers a more remote experience.
Whichever trail you choose, the journey is an immersion into a unique ecological system, with expert guides ensuring a safe and respectful experience for both you and the mountain.
Dry Seasons: January–February and June–September are the most popular months for trekking, as trails are less muddy and views are clearer.
Rainy Seasons: The rest of the year sees heavier rains, which can make the trails more challenging, but the landscapes are at their most lush and vibrant.
Tip: The weather in the Rwenzoris is notoriously unpredictable. Always pack for cold, wet conditions regardless of the season, including sturdy hiking boots, warm layers, and a rain jacket.
By Air: Charter flights can be arranged from Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi Airfield to Kasese Airstrip, which is a short drive from the park.
By Road: From Kampala, the journey to Kasese (the gateway to the park) takes about 4–6 hours, offering scenic views of the Ugandan countryside.
