What Is POATE and Why Does It Matter for Uganda’s Tourism?

Every year, Uganda hosts one of the most important travel and tourism events in East Africa  the Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo (POATE). If you work in tourism, love travel, or want to understand how Uganda markets itself to the world, POATE is where it all happens.

What is POATE?

The Pearl of Africa Tourism Expo (POATE) is Uganda’s flagship tourism and travel trade exhibition, organized by the Uganda Tourism Board.

It brings together global tourism buyers, travel media, investors, tour operators, hospitality brands, airlines, conservation organizations, and local tourism businesses under one roof.

Each year, the expo takes place in Kampala at the Speke Resort Convention Centre, turning the city into a hub of global travel conversations.

POATE is Uganda’s chance to tell the world one powerful message: Uganda is open, ready, and unforgettable.

Why the Name “Pearl of Africa”?

Uganda earned the nickname “Pearl of Africa” because of its extraordinary diversity — wildlife, landscapes, cultures, and warm people. From mountain gorillas and chimpanzees to the Nile River and vibrant kingdoms, the country offers one of the richest travel experiences on the continent.

POATE exists to showcase that story to the world.

The Purpose of POATE

POATE is a tourism marketplace and promotional platform designed to:

  • Position Uganda as a top global travel destination
  • Create business opportunities for Ugandan tourism operators
  • Attract international buyers and investors
  • Promote sustainable tourism and conservation
  • Strengthen partnerships within the travel industry

It’s where deals are made, partnerships are formed, and Uganda’s tourism future is shaped.

Who Attends POATE?

POATE brings together:

International buyers – travel agents and tour operators discovering Uganda
