5 DAYS MOUNT. ELGON HIKING SAFARI.
Overview.
One interesting eastern Uganda safari is this five-day Mount Elgon hike, during which you will explore the beautiful mountain ranges of Elgon, which stands at an elevation of 4,321 meters above sea level.
This safari also takes you to view the Sipi River with its romantic Sipi Falls, enjoy the caves, and visit the source of the Nile in Jinja, which is visited by boat cruising. Attractions en route include the Mabira forest with its primate-like olive baboons and Vervet monkeys, tea plantations, and roadside Nyama-Choma.
Detailed itinerary.
Day 1: Kampala-Budadiri to Sasa Camp.
Start the safari immediately with a pick-up from the hotel in Kampala with the help of a driver guide. Then, head to Mbale using the Kampala, Jinja road. The journey is synonymous with attractions like the Mabira natural forest, tea plantations in Lugazi, and a photo opportunity at the Cable Bridge in Jinja.
Head to the Budadiri area where you will be welcomed by park rangers, book some porters to help you carry the luggage and after attending the briefing exercise, start the hike which takes you through the plantations of coffee, and local communities then proceed to Sasa camp where you will have your dinner and Camp for a night.
Day 2: Hike from Sasa Camp to Mude Camp.
Immediately proceed with a hike after breakfast passing through the forest vegetation to Mude camp which takes about 4 or 5 hours. The distance covered here is 600m and the night will be spent at Mude hut.
Day 3: Hike Mude Camp to Wagagai Peak - then return to Mude.
This day hike rewards you with the best opportunity to reach Elgon's highest peak, Wagagai. The hike covers a distance of about 9 kilometres taking about 7-8 hours. On reaching the summit, enjoy the beautiful breath from the mountains. Then descend back to Mude camp for your dinner and night stay.
Day 4: Mude Camp back to Mbale city.
Here you can use any trail that's impressive enough to make the hike more enjoyable. One of the trails can take you to Sipi to enjoy thunderous and scenic Sipi Falls, Sipi Caves, and Sipi River, and there transfer to Mbale where you will spend a night.
Day 5: Mbale to Jinja and Kampala after the source of the Nile visit.
Enjoy an early morning breakfast and transfer to Kampala with a stopover in Jinja where you will enjoy a boat cruise to the source of the River Nile. While on the cruise, spot some birds, hippos, and crocodiles.
View where the longest river starts its journey as it separates from Lake Victoria. Then proceed to Kampala and you will be dropped at the airport or hotel and this will be the end of the safari.
